Overview: The Nubians are an ethnic group originating in the Nile region that today forms northern Sudan and southern Egypt. Famous for their horsemanship and their skill and precision with the bow, many Nubians were hired by Hannibal during the Punic Wars to fight against the Romans. Arabization accounts for the prevalence of Sunni Islam and is influencing some of these peoples to take up Arab languages in place of their original Nubian languages.
